X is for xerus.

Waaaaaaahoooooooooo!!  I am pretty darn happy I came up with a good, legitimate topic for "X"!  Seriously - I'm super excited.

Xerus: African ground squirrels form a taxon of squirrels under the subfamily Xerinae.
Look it's true!

I'm not sure if these are specifically African ground squirrels....but they sure are for today's purpose!

Blogging from A-Z • V

V is for the Virginia Thurston Healing of the Bead-It-Forward beneficiaries for 2015.

I had the fun and important task of selecting beneficiaries for the 2015 Bead-It-Forward project.  One of them is the Rays of Hope Breast Cancer Research Center.  The other beneficiary is the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden.  Here are some quotes from their website that made this establishment an easy choice:

"You are a person, not a disease, and you can live well with cancer, and beyond. We are here to help you."

The Healing Garden is an educational nonprofit organization dedicated to providing integrative cancer care through therapeutic services, educational programs, and a healing environment for all people with a cancer diagnosis, as well as providing wellness education and support to promote cancer prevention for the community at large."

"...envisioned a center providing services with three components: complementary therapies, psychosocial support, and the healing environment of nature. They both felt strongly that the cost of services should not be an obstacle to care."

I had the pleasure of visiting the Healing Garden a few months ago and was very impressed by their facility and the work they do. I am so honored to be heading up a project that will raise funds for the important work they do there, and at Rays of Hope!

R is for rabbits!!  Or as I affectionately call them...cute little bunnies!!

My friend Therese contributed some patterns for Bead-It-Forward this year and these bunnies were part of her collection of patterns!  As always, it's super fun to see all the different colors and bead finishes that everyone selects for their square!

Thank you again Therese for your contribution of patterns (and squares!)  Stay tuned for later this week when we'll be starting the process of selecting a theme for next year's Bead-It-Forward project!!

Blogging from A-Z • Q

This letter can be challenging.  This year I'm LUCKY - the very nature of the Bead-It-Forward project is to take those squares and assemble them onto QUILTS!

A few months ago I put the call out to quilt shops across New England for some miniature blank quilts.  I'm so grateful that Knit One, Quilt Two of West Boylston, Massachusetts answered the call!

Last time I spoke with Melissa, the owner, she said she had 25 ready to go and more on the way!

Everyone's contribution really makes a difference.  From the people who created patterns, to the business and individuals who contributed, to the folks who kindly included ribbons, cards and other craft supplies in their packages, to friends and family that helped process and log the squares, to the hundreds of beaders from all over the world who contributed over 1200 squares...the project wouldn't be possible without you all!!  I am so excited to bring the final products to auction off at Bead Fest Philadelphia this August and see how big a donation we can make to our beneficiaries!

Blogging from A-Z • P

P is for package from Poland!

So......I mentioned a few posts ago, that I was waiting on a package from Poland.  Last Monday I received news from Weronika, my contact for the beading group in Poland that the package was scanned in New Jersey!

But then, on Tuesday I received an email from a college math professor in Connecticut:

My mother sent my son a present, and in the box was another box with a bunch of beaded squares and some paperwork mentioning bead it forward.  How this box got in there no one has any idea, the squares are from Poland.  I googled and found you, I’m happy to send these forward if you tell me how.

WHAT!?!?!?!  And to make matters even more interesting, the gentleman's mother lives in Florida!!  So the package was in New Jersey....then Florida...then Connecticut...and ultimately Massachusetts.  I was so grateful that Jeff took the time to research where this belonged and very kindly sent the package right away.

The package was filled with absolutely wonderful squares from the group of Polish beaders!

Having grown up on pierogi, galumpkis & kapusta, I was happy to see my Polish heritage represented this year!

Blogging from A-Z • N

N is for the numbers that is....

So back in July of 2013, one beader posed the question of what type of animals were allowed.  I answered in a blog post on the Bead-It-Forward page, which in summary said, "any animal is fine!"

Since that time, over 1200 squares have been submitted to Bead-It-Forward.  Using the photo I used in that blog post back in July, here is how the animals broke down in grouping and classes..... (all the numbers are estimates based on some down & dirty, quick calculations on the spreadsheet I used to log the squares!)

The invertebrates were totally crushed by the vertebrates, with mammals coming in at a whopping 489 squares.  I wasn't too surprised that we didn't see any protozoa, flatworms, annelid worms, or myriapods....

Bunnies, took the lead in mammals with 49 squares submitted.  There were tons of birds submitted, with owls being the most popular type of bird.   Insects also had a good showing with dragonflies and ladybugs

Here is a further breakdown of the groupings (again, are not 100% exact!):

Blogging from A-Z • M

M is for mosaics.

I was blown away by all the creativity that went into the squares.  One thing that stood out as pretty spectacular were some of the amazing mosaics that were sent in.  Some were done by individuals, but others were a huge group effort.

Of course there was the lion mosaic from Lyon, France, which was featured for the letter "L" yesterday.  But here's a look at many other mosaics that came in!
June E. of New Mexico sent in this darling giraffe mother and calf.

Donna F., from the Bead Society of Greater Kansas City, MO.
Some penguins from Josie F, of the Bead Society of Slidell, LA.
From the Bead Mavens of New Mexico, a mosaic of the animal theme logo.
From the Oklahoma Beading Society!  45 squares to make up this giant, amazing mosaic!
From the Wednesday Night Beaders of Dayton, OH.

There were also several elk and porcupine mosaics submitted to the project. It was great to see all the bead colors and finishes!

This mosaic came in finished as a miniature pillow.  This was sent in by Barbara of New York.  Barbara was diagnosed with breast cancer in August of 2011.  She took up beading to pass the time as she recovered from surgery.

Stay tuned for the letter "N" tomorrow.  For more A-Z blogs, click here!

This gorgeous lion mosaic came from a group of beaders in Lyon, France.  Isn't it spectacular!!!???

There were many other lions as well.  Be sure to scroll through the gallery page on the Bead-It-Forward website to see more lions! Among plenty of other wonderful animals!

L is also for Lamb!  This pattern was uploaded early on and is very special to me, because my niece helped me create it on BeadTool!  Here is a small sampling of the lambs that came into the Bead-It-Forward project this year:

Alenka's Birthday Butterfly Blog Hop (Also - Blogging from A-Z • J)

I had the pleasure of virtually meeting Alenka several years back, when she was paired with me for Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Blog Party.  She's an extremely talented polymer clay artist and beader from Slovenia.

A few weeks ago, Alenka had a great idea to launch us into spring, and to celebrate her birthday, by hosting a Butterflies Birthday Blog Hop.  The rules were quite simple, create something in the theme of butterflies and post on the reveal day.

Having measured over eight feet of snow in New England, I knew I had to jump on in and join this hop to get that springy feeling!!  Plus, who doesn't love butterflies!? And of course I wanted to help celebrate my friend Alenka's birthday!  So HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALENKA!  I'm glad to call you my friend.

In keeping with my other challenge this month, Blogging from A-Z, "J" is for juxtaposition.  Because isn't it funny and out of place to see a butterfly with snow in the background!?

Thank you for hosting this fun challenge Alenka!

I is for interesting and innovative!

There were no "I" animals submitted for Bead-It-Forward, so I thought it would be fun to go with something interesting and innovative (of which there was plenty to choose from!)    I really enjoyed the way Mary from Illinois interpreted this gecko pattern!

Blogging from A-Z • G

G is for giraffe!

The giraffe pattern was the first pattern to be posted on Bead-It-Forward's pattern page.  We received lots of giraffes.  Many of that first pattern.  And some great originals!   As usual, it's so fun to see the different colors and finishes that each beader chooses to work up a pattern.

....oh! and this great giraffe mosaic! This mosaic was sent in from June, of New Mexico, who is a breast cancer survivor.

Come by tomorrow for the letter "H".  And to check out other A-Z Bloggers, click here!

E is for elephant!

Bead-it-Forward had a LOT of elephants turned in!  Very much like the dragonfly pattern, two of the elephant patterns were widely used.  And there were some other fun elephant surprises!  Here is a small sampling of elephant squares.

If you are interested in seeing more, check out the gallery page on the Bead-It-Forward website.   So far there are 1167 squares uploaded to the gallery.  And there are still some squares waiting to be logged and uploaded!

Blogging from A-Z • D

D is for dogs, deer, and dragonflies!

The dragonfly pattern was extremely popular!! It was a two drop peyote stitch with very few colors so it was quick and easy to work up.

And there were some other fun animals that start with 'D'...
Maria of Louisiana
Janice from California
Pauline of New Mexico

Dee of Texas

Blogging from A-Z • C

C is for CHAMELEON.....

Back in November of 2014, Bead-It-Forward put a call out for patterns to be submitted for use in the Bead-It-Forward project.  The only requirement is that they be animal themed.  Nearly 50 patterns were contributed from bead artists around the world!  They were all gorgeous, and many beaders used them for their square donations.

A group of beaders from Poland sent in five patterns, including this darling chameleon.  It was used many times.   I love to see everyone's use of beads with different finishes and color.   Here's a sampling of what came into the Bead-It-Forward headquarters:
Sharon of Iowa

Jodi of Wisconsin

Chris of Wisconsin

Weronika of New Mexico

Therese of Alabama
Barbara of North Carolina
Linda  of Texas
Leslie of Texas
Jennifer of Ohio

I hope you enjoyed all the iterations of the chameleon pattern.  I can't wait to see what the beading group in Poland has created.  Seems their actual squares are in international postal limbo right now, unfortunately! But I remain hopeful they will arrive in the US soon!.

Please come back tomorrow for the letter "D".  If you'd like to see what others A-Z bloggers are writing about, click here.
